Creating Utopia

After a year's worth of study, you have become a mini-expert in dystopias and all of the good intentions that create them. Well, it's finally your turn. As we've discussed, the concept of a Utopia, or perfect society, entails envisioning what circumstances need to exist in order to create perfection. Create your own version of Utopia and consider the following aspects of a society as you do so:
  • Government: You need to know how you will enforce the rules of the land, and because you want people to behave in a specific fashion in order to establish the type of environment and philosophy of living central to your society, you will need rules. How should people behave? What will happen if people don't behave in that way? What are the worst ways a person can behave? (This may overlap with other aspects of your society, like religion or commerce or leisure time). Establish a basic system of government for your society.

  • Religion: Consider your philosophy for living. Will your society support a particular religion or guiding principles for behavior? Is there a specific figurehead that will be worshipped? How will people express their reverence and when? Decide how heavily you want religion and/or spirituality to factor into your society.

  • Commerce: This is a big topic. Consider how people will spend their time. What jobs will be necessary for people to live within the philosophy you set forth? Will there be money? When will people work and for how long?

  • Entertainment/Leisure Time: What will people do for fun? What is acceptable behavior? When is a good time?

Products:
1. Newcomer's Handbook: Design a guidebook for someone moving to your Utopia. Include the information from the four aspects of your society (see above) so the person understands how to behave and what is expected.

2. 3-Dimensional and/or Visual Representation of Utopia: Choose a talent or creative strength of yours, and design some way of representing your utopia. Possibilities can include drawings, paintings, rendering with alternative media, dioramas, sculpture, models, performances, videos, skits, commercials, brochures, and any other ideas you may have. REMEMBER to check with Ms. Alexis if you have a new idea.
